Heating That Handles a High-Desert Winter

Albuquerque winters read mild on paper and feel very different at 2 a.m. in January. We sit high enough that overnight lows drop below freezing regularly, and the swing between a 60-degree afternoon and a 20-degree night makes a furnace cycle far more than the annual run-hours suggest. In the East Mountains — Tijeras, Cedar Crest, Sandia Park, Edgewood — it is a genuine mountain heating season with real snow.

That cycling is what wears out igniters, flame sensors and blower motors, and it is why we build an annual tune-up around the parts that actually fail here rather than a generic checklist.

Every heating call includes a combustion and heat-exchanger inspection. A cracked exchanger or a bad flue draft is a carbon-monoxide risk, not just a comfort problem, and it is not something we will leave in your house without telling you.

  • Safety First, Every Call We inspect the heat exchanger and flue draft on every visit — no exceptions, no upcharge.
  • Sized to Your Home Load calculations rather than rules of thumb, so the system is not oversized and short-cycling.
  • Flat-Rate Pricing You approve the number before we start. No hourly meter, nothing added afterward.

Repair It or Replace It?

Repair It or Replace It?

The rule of thumb we give homeowners: if the furnace is under about twelve years old and the repair costs a fraction of a replacement, repair almost always wins. Past fifteen years, with a major component failing and efficiency already well below a modern unit, the math starts to flip.

What we will not do is quote a replacement to avoid a repair. We give you both numbers — the fix in front of you and the installed cost of the alternative — with the efficiency difference in real operating-cost terms, and you decide.

If the heat exchanger is cracked, that is the one case where we will be direct: the system needs to come out. Carbon monoxide is not a risk worth managing around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer emergency heating repair in Albuquerque?

Yes. We dispatch to no-heat calls 24 hours a day, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Call (505) 349-4409 and a real person will answer.

Why does my furnace keep shutting off?

Short-cycling usually traces to a dirty filter, a failing flame sensor, or a blocked flue. All three are common finds here and all three are diagnosed on the first visit.

Is a cracked heat exchanger really that serious?

Yes — it can leak carbon monoxide into your home. We check it on every furnace call, and if we find a crack we shut the system down and walk you through the options immediately.

How often should a furnace be serviced?

Once a year, ideally in autumn before the first cold snap. An annual tune-up catches most failures before they leave you without heat.

Do you service boilers and radiant heat?

We do. Hydronic systems are less common than forced air here, but they are well represented in older Albuquerque and Santa Fe homes and our technicians still work on them regularly.

Do you work in the East Mountains?

Yes — Tijeras, Cedar Crest, Sandia Park, Edgewood and Moriarty are all in our regular service area, and they see a longer, colder heating season than the valley.

My serviceman was cordial, friendly, professional, and had a great sense of humor. This is his first visit to my house. I felt comfortable with him. He does a great job.

The overall service of B. Carlson is excellent. They have been my HVAC company almost since I bought this house and I see no reason to switch. As they say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Well, B. Carlson ain't broke, so I've no reason to fix them. I have recommended them to friends and neighbors many times.
