Softening and Drinking Water Are Different Jobs
A softener deals with hardness so your plumbing and appliances survive. It is not a drinking-water filter, and it adds a small amount of sodium in the exchange.
Reverse osmosis handles the other job: a multi-stage membrane system on a dedicated tap that removes dissolved solids, improves taste noticeably, and gives you clear ice and better coffee. The two work well together, which is why we often install both.

Does RO remove everything?
It removes a very high proportion of dissolved solids, which is why the taste difference is obvious. No system removes literally everything.
How often do filters need changing?
Pre-filters typically every six to twelve months, the membrane every few years. We schedule it so it does not get forgotten.
Do I need RO if I have a softener?
They do different jobs — softening protects plumbing, RO improves drinking water. Many homes benefit from both.
Does it waste water?
Some water goes to drain in the process. Modern systems are considerably more efficient than older ones.
