Watch for six signals: uneven temperatures between rooms, weak airflow, new noises, unusual odors, energy bills climbing at the same thermostat setting, and a system that cycles on and off more often than it used to. Any one warrants a look; several together usually means something is already failing.

What Each Sign Usually Means

  • Uneven heating or cooling. Duct leakage, blocked returns, or a system that has lost capacity. Rarely a thermostat problem, though that is what most people adjust first.
  • Weak airflow. Most often a loaded filter or a dirty blower wheel. If those are clean, suspect the blower motor or crushed flex duct.
  • Banging, rattling, screeching, buzzing. Loose components, failing bearings, or an electrical fault. A hard buzz at startup with no fan movement usually means a dead capacitor.
  • Odors. Musty means moisture in the coil or ducts. Burning or hot plastic means shut it down and call for emergency service. Anything sulfurous near a furnace means leave and call the gas utility.
  • Rising bills. Efficiency loss almost always precedes a failure by weeks or months.
  • Short cycling. Starting and stopping every few minutes strains the compressor badly. Causes include restricted airflow, low refrigerant, an oversized system, or a failing control.

Maintenance or Repair?

Dirty coils, loaded filters, drifting refrigerant charge, and an uncalibrated thermostat are maintenance. A failed capacitor, bad blower motor, refrigerant leak, or cracked heat exchanger is a repair.
