Twice a year at minimum: a spring startup before the first hot week and a proper shutdown in fall. Evaporative coolers need more attention than refrigerated systems because they run water continuously and pull unfiltered outside air — and Albuquerque’s hard water and blowing dust attack both.

Spring Startup

  • Inspect and replace cooler pads — mineralized pads block airflow and cool poorly
  • Clean the reservoir and remove accumulated scale and sediment
  • Test the pump and clear the water distribution lines and holes
  • Check and adjust the float valve for correct water level
  • Inspect the blower, belt tension, bearings, and motor
  • Open the winter damper and verify airflow through the ductwork
  • Confirm the bleed-off line is working, which is what limits scale buildup all season

Fall Shutdown

Just as important, and more often skipped. Draining and drying the reservoir prevents mineral crust, corrosion, and biological growth over the winter, and it prevents freeze damage to the pan, pump, and supply line. Closing and sealing the damper matters too — an unsealed cooler is a large open hole in your ceiling for the entire heating season, and it will show up on your gas bill.

Mid-Season Attention

Between professional visits, check the water level, watch for dry spots on the pads (a sign of clogged distribution holes), and listen for new noises from the blower. Homes with especially hard water may need pads replaced more than once a season.

Why Hard Water Is the Central Problem

Water across the Albuquerque metro carries substantial dissolved calcium and magnesium. As water evaporates off the pads, those minerals stay behind — crusting pads, clogging distribution lines, scaling the pump, and coating the reservoir. That is the single largest driver of swamp cooler failure here. A functioning bleed-off line helps significantly, and a whole-house water softener helps more, while also protecting your water heater and fixtures.

What Skipping It Costs

Weak airflow, poor cooling on the hottest days, unusual noises, water waste, and shortened equipment life. Most mid-season failures we see trace directly to a startup that was never done properly.
