For most Albuquerque homes we recommend a whole-home ducted evaporative cooler, and where budget allows, a high-efficiency rigid-media model such as MasterCool. Ducted systems cool the entire house evenly rather than one room, and rigid media holds more water, cools harder, and needs less frequent pad service than traditional aspen.
Why Whole-Home Ducted Systems
Portable and window units have their place for a single room or a temporary situation, but they cannot deliver consistent comfort across a house. A properly sized, correctly installed ducted system gives you:
- Even temperatures from room to room instead of one cold room and several warm ones
- Enough air movement to handle a 100-degree Albuquerque afternoon
- Steady operation without constantly opening and closing windows to chase comfort
- Airflow designed around your home’s actual layout
Rigid Media vs. Aspen Pads
Traditional aspen pads are inexpensive and need replacing at least annually — sooner with our hard water. Rigid media pads cost more upfront but hold considerably more water, produce a larger temperature drop, resist mineral clogging longer, and last several seasons. In a metro where hard-water scale is the primary failure mode for these systems, that durability is worth real money. MasterCool and similar rigid-media units are what we most often recommend for homeowners planning to stay.
Sizing and Installation Decide the Outcome
Most complaints we hear about swamp coolers — weak airflow, hot spots, a unit that cannot keep up in July — trace back to sizing or installation rather than the equipment itself. Square footage, ceiling height, duct layout, register placement, and how air exhausts from the house all determine performance. An undersized unit on undersized ducts will disappoint regardless of brand.
What We Evaluate
Home size and layout, existing duct capacity and condition, relief-air path, roof or wall mounting conditions, water supply and bleed-off, and whether your insulation is making the cooling load larger than it needs to be. Hard water is a factor too — a water softener extends pad and pump life noticeably.
When to Consider Converting
If monsoon humidity genuinely bothers you, we will lay out what a refrigerated air conversion actually involves rather than pretending it is a unit swap.
