The most common causes are power outages, stuck float switches, clogged discharge lines, clogged intakes, undersizing, and simple age. Nearly all are preventable — and the power outage is the one that catches most homeowners, because the storm causing the water is the same storm cutting the power.

Power Failure

The single most common cause of a flooded basement. A monsoon downpour brings water and knocks out power simultaneously, and a primary pump with no electricity is no protection at all. A battery backup pump is the answer, and it is the upgrade most worth making.

Stuck or Failed Float Switch

The float tells the pump when to run. If it hangs on the pit wall, gets tangled in the discharge line, or fails, the pump either never starts or never stops. Both outcomes are bad — one floods, the other burns out the motor. Debris in the pit and a pit that is too narrow are the usual reasons a float sticks.

Clogged Discharge or Intake

A blocked discharge line means the pump runs but water recirculates back into the pit. A frozen discharge outlet does the same thing in winter — worth checking, since New Mexico’s overnight lows freeze standing water in an outlet pipe. A clogged intake screen starves the pump.

Undersizing

A pump that cannot keep up with peak inflow runs continuously and fails early. Sizing has to account for monsoon-season peaks rather than typical conditions — that is exactly when it will be tested.

Age and Neglect

Sump pumps are consumable, typically seven to ten years. Bearings wear, impellers erode, and switches fail. A pump that has never been tested is a pump nobody knows the condition of.

How to Prevent All of It

  • Test it with a bucket of water before monsoon season and again before winter
  • Install a battery backup
  • Keep the pit clean and the lid on to keep debris out
  • Check the discharge outlet for blockage and freeze exposure
  • Verify the check valve works so water does not flow back in
  • Add a water alarm that alerts you before you find the water yourself
