A backflow preventer is a valve that allows water to flow only one direction — into your home — and blocks it from reversing back into the public supply. It protects drinking water from contamination when pressure conditions change unexpectedly.
What It Prevents
Two things can reverse the flow in a water line. Back-siphonage happens when supply pressure drops suddenly — a water main break, heavy fire hydrant use, or a repair upstream — creating suction that pulls water backward. Back-pressure happens when downstream pressure exceeds supply pressure, pushing water back toward the main.
Either way, whatever that water has been in contact with comes with it. The classic residential example is an irrigation system: a hose end or sprinkler head sitting in standing water, fertilizer, or pesticide, connected to the same supply that feeds your kitchen tap.

Types
Reduced pressure zone (RPZ) assemblies offer the highest protection and are required for high-hazard applications. Double check valve assemblies suit lower-hazard connections. Pressure vacuum breakers are common on irrigation. Which one you need depends on the hazard level and local requirements — this is not a preference.
Testing Is Usually Required
Backflow assemblies have internal check valves and relief mechanisms that wear, and most jurisdictions require annual testing by a certified tester with results reported to the water authority. For commercial properties this is an active compliance obligation, not a suggestion.

Installing a backflow preventer creates a closed system, which means thermal expansion from your water heater has nowhere to go. Without an expansion tank, that shows up as a T&P valve weeping — a symptom frequently misdiagnosed as a bad valve.
