Grease is the number one cause — it goes down warm and liquid, then cools and solidifies on the pipe wall. After that: food scraps (especially starchy and fibrous ones), coffee grounds, soap scum combined with hard water minerals, and garbage disposal misuse.

Grease Is the Main Problem

Bacon fat, oil, butter, and the grease rinsed off pans all pour easily when warm. A few feet down the line they cool, congeal, and coat the pipe wall. Every subsequent bit of food debris sticks to that layer. This is a slow accumulation that ends abruptly — the drain works fine until the day it does not.

Pour grease into a can and throw it away. Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing. Hot water and dish soap do not solve it; they just move the grease a bit further down the line before it cools.

Food Scraps the Disposal Should Not Get

  • Pasta, rice, and bread — they keep absorbing water and swelling

Hard Water Makes It Worse
