Yes. Adding a garbage disposal where there was not one is a common job. The two things that determine scope are whether there is an electrical outlet under the sink, and whether the existing sink and drain configuration will accommodate one.

What a New Installation Involves

  1. Verify the sink drain opening is a standard size the disposal mount will fit
  2. Confirm adequate cabinet space below — a deep sink bowl leaves less room than you would expect
  3. Remove the existing basket strainer and install the disposal mounting assembly
  4. Mount the unit and reconfigure the drain plumbing, including the trap and any second-bowl connection
  5. Connect the dishwasher drain line if applicable, with a high loop or air gap
  6. Electrical connection — hardwired or plugged into a dedicated switched outlet
  7. Test under full flow and check every connection

The Two Things That Add Cost

No electrical under the sink. This is the most common addition. A disposal needs a dedicated switched circuit or outlet, and if the cabinet does not have one, that is electrical work on top of the plumbing.

Drain reconfiguration. Adding a disposal changes the drain geometry, and on a double-bowl sink the existing trap arrangement often has to be redone. If the drain sits low relative to the trap arm, the configuration may need rethinking to avoid chronic slow draining.

Sizing It

Horsepower matched to household use rather than the largest available. Higher horsepower grinds more effectively and jams less, but also needs more cabinet space and a stronger electrical supply. For most households a mid-range unit is the right call.

Set It Up to Last

The habits matter more than the unit: cold water before, during, and 30 seconds after every use, and no grease, coffee grounds, fibrous vegetables, bones, or starchy foods. Grease in particular does not damage the disposal — it destroys the drain line downstream.
