A well-maintained residential RO system lasts 10 to 15 years, though the individual components turn over on much shorter cycles — filters every six to twelve months, membranes every two to five years. What eventually ages out is the housings, fittings, faucet, and storage tank.
Component Life vs. System Life
- Sediment and carbon pre-filters: 6–12 months
- RO membrane: 2–5 years, depending on water quality and pre-filter maintenance
- Post-filter: annually
- Storage tank: often 5–10 years; bladders fail and tanks lose pressure
- Housings, fittings, tubing, and faucet: 10–15 years, and these are what typically determine when the whole system gets replaced
What Shortens It
Skipped carbon pre-filter changes. The most consequential mistake. That filter removes chlorine before water reaches the membrane, and chlorine degrades RO membranes quickly. Letting it lapse to save on a cartridge is how homeowners replace membranes years early.
Hard water. Dissolved minerals foul the membrane surface. An RO system fed from Albuquerque’s hard municipal water works considerably harder than one downstream of a softener — which is a real argument for installing both if you are considering either.
Low incoming pressure, which reduces production and stresses the system.
Sediment reaching the membrane because a pre-filter was overdue.
Signs the System Is Aging Out
Slow flow that persists after new filters and a membrane. A storage tank that will not hold pressure. Leaks at fittings or housings. Cracked or brittle tubing. And declining taste or dissolved-solids performance even with fresh components.
Testing Tells You Definitively
A dissolved-solids reading before and after the system shows whether the membrane is still doing its job — far more reliable than judging by taste.
