Yes. MasterCool is one of the strongest evaporative cooler brands for the New Mexico climate, largely because of its rigid-media pads — they hold more water, produce a bigger temperature drop, and resist the hard-water scaling that destroys traditional aspen pads here.

Why MasterCool Performs Well Locally

  • Rigid media pads. Thick, structured media holds far more water than aspen and stays saturated more evenly. That translates directly into cooler supply air on a 100-degree afternoon.
  • High airflow capacity. Enough CFM to cool a whole house rather than one end of it, which matters in open floor plans and homes with vaulted ceilings.
  • Durable construction. These units sit on a roof through New Mexico sun, wind, and hail. Materials that hold up outdoors are not a small consideration.
  • Low operating cost. A fan and a pump instead of a compressor — dramatically less electricity than refrigerated air.
  • Parts availability. Widely stocked in the Albuquerque market, which matters when a pump fails in July.

The Honest Caveats

Brand does not overcome physics or bad installation. Even a MasterCool will disappoint if it is undersized for the house, connected to undersized or leaky ducts, or installed without an adequate relief-air path — air has to leave the house, and a sealed-up home will not cool no matter what is on the roof. In our experience most complaints about evaporative cooling trace to one of those three, not to the equipment.

And like any evaporative cooler, performance drops during monsoon season when humidity rises. That is inherent to the technology, not a brand failing.

Hard Water Is the Real Enemy

Albuquerque water carries substantial dissolved calcium and magnesium. As water evaporates off the pads, those minerals stay behind — clogging media, scaling the pump, and blocking distribution holes. Rigid media resists this better than aspen, but it is not immune. A functioning bleed-off line makes a large difference, and a whole-house water softener makes a larger one while also protecting your water heater and fixtures.

Getting the Most From One

Correct sizing, adequate ductwork, a proper relief path, seasonal startup and winterization, and annual pad and pump service. We install and service MasterCool along with Breezair, Champion, and Frigiking. Care Club members get scheduled seasonal service.
