Air Filtration

Air Filters Sized So They
Clean Without Choking Airflow

The most common filtration mistake we find is a high-MERV filter forced into a slot never designed for it — better ratings on paper, worse performance in practice.

Indoor Air Quality

Rating Is Not the Same as Performance

A one-inch MERV 13 filter looks like an upgrade over a MERV 8. In a system designed for the MERV 8, it often is not — the restriction raises static pressure, drops airflow across the coil, and leaves you with less filtration reaching the house because more air is bypassing the filter entirely.

The right answer in most Albuquerque homes is a deep media cabinet: four or five inches of pleated media with far more surface area, which filters better and restricts less. It also lasts six to twelve months instead of one, which matters given our dust load.

  • Static Pressure Measured We verify the filter your system can actually handle instead of guessing from the rating.
  • Media Cabinets Installed Deep-pleat cabinets fitted where a one-inch slot is the limiting factor.
  • Realistic Intervals Change intervals based on our dust load, not the packaging.

What We See

Signs Your Filtration Is Wrong

Filtration problems show up as comfort and equipment problems.

  • Weak Airflow at Registers

A restrictive filter is one of the most common causes and the cheapest to fix.

  • Coil Freezing Up

Low airflow drops coil temperature until it ices. Filters are the first thing to check.

  • Dust Settling Fast

If surfaces dust over within days, air is bypassing the filter or the filter is too open.

  • Filters Filthy in Weeks

Normal here — it usually means you need more filter area, not more frequent changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What MERV rating should I use?

Whatever your system can handle without losing airflow — often MERV 11 to 13 in a deep media cabinet, but only after measuring.

How often should I change filters in Albuquerque?

One-inch filters frequently need monthly changes here. A deep media filter typically runs six to twelve months.

Are washable filters a good idea?

Generally not. They filter poorly compared with pleated media and are rarely dried properly before reinstalling.

Can you fit a better filter to my existing system?

Usually yes — a media cabinet can be added to most systems. We check clearances and static pressure first.
