Sizing Is Where Tankless Goes Wrong

A tankless unit heats water on demand, so its limit is flow rate rather than capacity. Undersize it and two showers at once will disappoint everyone. That is the single most common complaint about tankless, and it is a sizing failure rather than a technology failure.

The other two considerations are gas supply — tankless units need considerably more than a tank — and venting, which usually has to be new. We check both before recommending one.

  • Flow-Rate Sizing Sized on simultaneous demand and our incoming water temperature.
  • Gas Supply Verified We confirm the gas line can actually feed it before quoting.
  • Descaling Planned Hard water means periodic descaling, and we set that expectation up front.

What We See

Tankless Suits You If

Good candidates share these traits.

  • You Run Out of Hot Water

Back-to-back showers are exactly the problem tankless solves.

  • Space Is Tight

A wall-mounted unit frees the footprint a tank occupies.

  • You Are Staying Put

The longer service life pays back over years rather than months.

  • You Have Adequate Gas

Sufficient gas supply is the practical gate on most retrofits.

A tankless water heater was installed 11 years ago (by a plumber who no longer lives in the area) and I recently found out that some of the pipes were not "up to code." Two men came from . B Carlson and fixed the problem. They were efficient, patient with my techno-idiot questions, and very personable. I couldn't ask for better service!!

water heater went out on a friday morning, I called B Carlson and a technician was out early that afternoon. He quickly diagnosed the problem and since the heater was 9 years old I decided to replace it. The new water heater was installed before dinner time. The technician was fast and courteous. A professional job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I really never run out of hot water?

Not if it is sized correctly. Undersizing is the usual cause of disappointment, which is why we size on simultaneous demand.

How long do tankless units last?

Commonly twenty years or more with descaling, against eight to twelve for a tank.

Does hard water affect them?

Yes — scale builds in the heat exchanger, so periodic descaling is necessary. A softener reduces how often.

Is it more expensive to install?

Usually, because of gas and venting work. The longer life and lower running cost is where it earns that back.
