On a gas heater the usual suspects are the thermocouple or flame sensor, the gas control valve, or the pilot assembly. On an electric unit it is nearly always an element or a thermostat. All of those are repairs, and inexpensive ones.

Can you repair it the same day?
In most cases yes — the common failure parts are on the truck.
Is it worth repairing an older heater?
Under about eight years, usually yes. Past twelve with a failing tank, replacement is the better spend and we will say so.
Why does my pilot keep going out?
Almost always a failing thermocouple. It is a quick, inexpensive repair.
Do you repair tankless units too?
Yes, including descaling, which hard water makes necessary more often here.
