Air Handlers & Blowers

Air Handlers,
The Half of the System Nobody Sees

The indoor half moves the air. When a blower, coil or control fails, the symptom usually looks like a cooling problem — so we diagnose the whole system rather than the outdoor unit alone.

Cooling

Airflow Problems Masquerade as Cooling Problems

When a house is not cooling, the outdoor unit gets the blame. Often the actual fault is indoors — a failing blower motor, a dirty evaporator coil, or a filter so restrictive the system cannot move enough air across it.

Low airflow drops coil temperature until the evaporator ices, at which point cooling stops entirely. Homeowners see ice and assume refrigerant. Frequently it is simply air.

  • Airflow Measured We measure static pressure and temperature split rather than assuming airflow is adequate.
  • Motors and ECMs Standard and variable-speed ECM blower motors diagnosed and replaced correctly.
  • Evaporator Cleaning The indoor coil cleaned, which is skipped far more often than the outdoor one.

What We See

Signs of an Air Handler Problem

These symptoms point indoors rather than out.

  • Ice on the Indoor Coil

Nearly always restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Running it iced risks the compressor.

  • Weak Airflow at Registers

A failing blower, a collapsed duct or a heavily restricted filter.

  • Rattling or Squealing Indoors

Blower wheel imbalance or worn bearings, both of which get worse if ignored.

  • Water Around the Indoor Unit

A blocked condensate drain, which will damage flooring and drywall if left.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my indoor coil freezing?

Restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Start with the filter, then have the airflow and charge measured.

How long do blower motors last?

Typically ten to fifteen years. ECM motors often last longer but cost more to replace.

Why is water pooling near the indoor unit?

Almost always a blocked condensate drain. It is a quick fix and worth doing immediately to avoid water damage.

Do you clean evaporator coils?

Yes. The indoor coil is skipped far more often than the outdoor one and makes a real difference to capacity.
