What Adjustment Involves

A PRV has an adjustment screw that changes spring tension against the internal diaphragm. Turning it changes the downstream setpoint. Setting it by feel produces a house that is either still over-pressurized or annoyingly weak.

What the Right Setting Is

Standard residential pressure sits well below what most municipal mains deliver. Too high stresses every joint, fixture seal, and appliance hose continuously. Too low means weak showers and appliances that fill slowly. There is a comfortable range, and where in it you want to sit depends partly on your home — a two-story house needs more at the street to deliver adequate pressure upstairs.

Check It at Night Too

Municipal pressure typically rises overnight when demand drops. A house that reads acceptable in the evening can be well over the safe range at 3 a.m., stressing the system while everyone sleeps. That is why a properly functioning PRV matters more than a one-time daytime reading suggests.

When Adjustment Will Not Hold

On an older valve with mineral buildup on the seat and diaphragm, adjustment often drifts back within weeks. If a valve will not hold its setting, replacement is the honest answer rather than repeated adjustment visits.
