The Calculation
Grain capacity needed equals daily water usage multiplied by hardness in grains per gallon, then multiplied by the days you want between regenerations. Usage is estimated from household size and habits; hardness comes from a test, not an assumption. That produces a capacity requirement, and the unit is selected to meet it with reasonable margin.
Why Both Errors Cost You
Undersized: the unit regenerates constantly — using more salt and, importantly in a desert city, more water. It may also let hard water through at the end of a cycle, which defeats the purpose.
Oversized: costs more upfront, and resin that sits too long between regenerations can foul. Bigger is not automatically better here.

A timer-based unit regenerates on schedule whether you needed it or not — wasting salt and regeneration water every cycle.
