Yes. A furnace tune-up restores efficiency that has drifted away over the season — clean burners, correct gas pressure, unrestricted airflow, and a properly calibrated thermostat all reduce how long the system runs, and run time is what your New Mexico Gas bill measures.
Where the Efficiency Is Lost
- Dirty burners. Incomplete combustion wastes fuel and produces carbon monoxide. Cleaning them is one of the more measurable improvements in a tune-up.
- Gas pressure out of spec. It drifts, and both too high and too low cost you — one wastes gas, the other produces less heat per cycle.
- Restricted airflow. A loaded filter or dust-caked blower wheel means longer run times and, in winter, repeated high-limit lockouts that are hard on the heat exchanger.
- A weak flame sensor or ignitor. Causes failed ignition attempts and retries — each one burns gas without delivering usable heat.
- Thermostat drift. A few degrees off means the system runs when it should not.

The efficiency gain is real, but the stronger financial argument locally is avoided repairs: an ignitor replaced during a $150 fall visit versus the same part failing at 11 p.m. in January at emergency rates.
The Safety Case Is the Strongest One
A tune-up includes a heat exchanger inspection and a combustion analysis with carbon monoxide testing. The heat exchanger is the only barrier between combustion gases and the air your family breathes, and a crack in it is invisible without an inspection. That check alone justifies the annual visit regardless of what it saves on gas.
Longer Equipment Life
Systems that run clean, correctly pressurized, and with adequate airflow reach the top of their expected lifespan. Those fighting restricted airflow for years do not — and replacement is a far larger number than a decade of tune-ups.
