What a Proper Installation Includes
Sizing based on peak demand and first-hour rating rather than simply matching the old unit. Correct venting and combustion air on gas units — this is a safety item, and it gets done wrong more often than homeowners realize. Proper gas line sizing, since a tankless unit typically needs more capacity than the tank it replaces. A temperature and pressure relief valve with correct discharge routing. A drain pan and, where the unit sits above finished space, a pan drain. Permits where code requires, and warranty registration on your behalf.
The Venting Detail Worth Knowing
If your water heater currently shares a chimney with a furnace and that furnace gets replaced with a high-efficiency condensing model, the water heater can be left improperly vented — an orphaned appliance in an oversized flue. That is a carbon monoxide concern and a common oversight when two contractors handle the two appliances. We check for it because we do both trades.
