How It Actually Works
The process is template-assisted crystallization. Media beads provide nucleation sites where calcium and magnesium form stable microscopic crystals. Once crystallized, the minerals lose their tendency to adhere to surfaces — they pass through your plumbing and out the drain rather than depositing on your water heater element, in your pipes, or on fixtures.

What You Do Not Get — Honestly
The water is still hard. The minerals are there, just in a form that does not scale. That means soap and shampoo will not lather the way they do with a true softener, glassware spotting is reduced but not eliminated, and laundry will not feel softer. If your expectation is the classic soft water experience, a conditioner will disappoint.
Conditioners also tend to perform less well as hardness increases, which matters in a market with water as hard as Albuquerque’s.
