Poor insulation forces your heating system to run longer and more often to hold the same temperature. The results are higher gas bills, cold spots that never resolve, a system that seems undersized when it is not, and accelerated wear from constant cycling.
What Happens Mechanically
Heat always moves toward cold. In winter, that means heat leaving your house through the ceiling, walls, and every unsealed gap. Your furnace has to replace it continuously. When insulation is thin, settled, or missing, the rate of loss rises — so the furnace runs longer per cycle and cycles more often. It is not producing less heat; it is losing heat faster than it can deliver it.
The Consequences
- Higher bills. Run time is what your New Mexico Gas bill measures.
- Cold spots. Rooms above garages, over crawlspaces, with large window areas, or at the end of a duct run suffer first.
- A system that seems too small. This is the expensive misdiagnosis. Homeowners replace a correctly sized furnace with a larger one, which then short-cycles and delivers worse comfort at higher cost. The problem was the building, not the equipment.
- More wear. Startup is when components fail, and more cycles means more startups.
- Frozen pipe risk. Uninsulated exterior walls and unconditioned spaces are exactly where supply lines end up needing frozen pipe repair during a cold snap.
New Mexico Winter Specifics
Albuquerque winters are mild on average and sharp at night — 40-degree daily swings are routine, and Santa Fe and the East Mountains go considerably colder. That swing pattern means the heating system cycles constantly rather than running steadily, and each cycle loses more heat through an under-insulated envelope. Older local housing stock often predates meaningful insulation standards, and blown-in insulation settles well below its original depth over decades.
Air Sealing Matters as Much
Insulation slows conduction but does not stop air movement. Gaps around can lights, plumbing and wiring penetrations, top plates, and the attic hatch let heated air escape straight into the attic. Sealing first, then insulating, outperforms adding depth alone — and costs less.
Do Not Forget Ducts
Ductwork in an unconditioned attic loses heat along every foot, and leaks dump heated air where nobody lives. Sealing and insulating ducts is often the highest-return work in a local home.
