Hydrojetting removes buildup from the pipe wall; cabling makes a hole through a blockage; chemicals mostly do neither. That is the whole comparison. Hydrojetting lasts longest, cabling is faster and gentler on fragile pipe, and chemical cleaners are the option we recommend against entirely.
Hydrojetting
High-pressure water scours the pipe back to its full inside diameter, stripping grease, soap scum, mineral scale, and root hairs off the wall. Because it removes the coating rather than opening a channel through it, results last years rather than months. It uses water only — no chemicals in your pipe or the wastewater stream.
Limitation: not appropriate for cast iron corroded thin or clay with separated joints, where pressure can worsen existing damage. A camera inspection first determines this.
Cabling (Snaking)
A rotating cable bores through the obstruction and restores flow. It is faster, less expensive, and gentler — the right choice for a single fixture clog, a quick emergency clear, or an older line too fragile for high pressure.
Limitation: it leaves the grease and scale coating intact. That is why cabled lines frequently re-clog within months, and why clearing the same line repeatedly costs more over time than jetting it once.
Chemical Drain Cleaners
We do not use them and recommend homeowners avoid them:
- They rarely clear an established blockage — at best they open a small channel
- They generate heat that damages older cast iron and can deform PVC
- They leave caustic liquid sitting in the trap for whoever opens it next
- They are hazardous to handle and store
- Repeated use in older Albuquerque homes with aging pipe does cumulative damage
Which to Use When
Single slow fixture, first occurrence: cabling. Grease-loaded kitchen line, repeat clogs, or main line maintenance: hydrojetting. Fragile older pipe: cabling at low speed, or repair if the camera shows the line is past cleaning.
The Cost Comparison That Matters
Cabling costs less per visit. If you need three of them a year, hydrojetting once is cheaper — and it tells you something is structurally wrong if the problem still returns.
