A straight sump pump replacement in an existing pit takes two to four hours. A new installation requiring pit excavation, discharge line routing, and electrical work takes a full day or more.
Replacement in an Existing Pit
Two to four hours typically. The work involves disconnecting and removing the old pump, cleaning accumulated sediment and debris from the pit, setting the new pump, connecting and often replacing the discharge piping and check valve, adjusting the float, and testing the full cycle with water.
Cleaning the pit is worth doing properly rather than quickly — accumulated silt is a leading cause of stuck float switches and clogged intakes, and skipping it means the new pump inherits the problem that shortened the last one’s life.
New Installation
A full day or longer. This adds excavating the pit and setting the basin, routing a new discharge line to an appropriate outlet point, running a dedicated GFCI circuit if one does not exist, and any concrete cutting and patching required. Discharge routing is often the most time-consuming part — the water has to go somewhere that will not send it straight back toward the foundation.

Worth Adding
A battery backup pump. The storm that produces the water is frequently the same storm that cuts the power — and a primary pump without electricity is no protection at all. Also consider a water alarm.
