A straightforward furnace replacement takes about 4 to 8 hours — most of a single working day. Jobs that involve ductwork changes, venting modifications, gas line work, or a difficult attic or crawlspace location can extend into a second day.

What Happens During the Install

  1. Floors and pathways are protected, and gas and electrical are shut off safely
  2. The old furnace is disconnected and removed
  3. The new unit is set, leveled, and connected to the plenum and ductwork
  4. Gas line, venting, and condensate drain (on condensing units) are connected
  5. Electrical and thermostat wiring is landed
  6. The system is started, gas pressure is set, and a combustion analysis with carbon monoxide testing is performed
  7. Airflow and temperature rise are measured and adjusted to the manufacturer’s spec

That last pair of steps is where installations most often go wrong. A furnace running outside its designed temperature rise will short-cycle and wear early no matter how good the equipment is.

What Extends the Timeline

  • Ductwork modification or sealing — common when the old system never heated evenly
  • Venting changes, especially converting an atmospheric furnace to a high-efficiency condensing unit, which vents differently and needs condensate drainage
  • Gas line resizing for a higher-input unit
  • Electrical work or a new circuit
  • Tight mechanical closets, attic, or crawlspace installations
  • Adding air conditioning or converting to a hybrid fuel system at the same time
  • Permit inspection scheduling

Planning Around It

Your heat will be off for most of the day, so a January install is worth planning around. Clear the equipment area and the path from the driveway, secure pets, and provide access to the electrical panel and gas shutoff.
