Yes, when performed by trained technicians on pipe that is structurally sound. It uses water only — no chemicals — and pressure is adjustable to the pipe’s material and condition. The important qualifier is that condition has to be verified first, which is why we camera older lines before jetting.
Why It Is Safe on Sound Pipe
Hydrojetting cleans with water. Nothing corrosive is introduced into your plumbing, nothing is left behind in the line, and nothing enters the wastewater stream. Pressure is set by the technician based on pipe material and diameter — PVC, ABS, sound cast iron, and intact clay all handle it well at appropriate settings.
Safer Than Chemicals, and Often Than Cabling
Caustic chemical drain cleaners generate heat that damages older cast iron and can deform PVC, and they leave hazardous liquid in the line. Hydrojetting does neither.
Compared with cabling, jetting is gentler in one important respect: an aggressive cutter head driven hard through a fragile line can catch and damage it, while water applies force evenly to the pipe wall. Both methods have appropriate uses.
When It Is Not the Right Choice
Being straight about this matters more than the marketing answer. Hydrojetting is not appropriate for cast iron corroded thin enough that the wall is compromised, clay with significant joint separation or cracking, Orangeburg pipe, or any line the camera shows as collapsed. In those cases pressure can worsen existing damage — and the line needs repair, not cleaning.
Which Is Why We Camera First
You cannot judge pipe condition from the age of the house. Two 1965 Albuquerque homes on the same street can have cast iron in very different states depending on sixty years of use. A camera inspection shows actual wall condition and joint integrity, and that determines whether to jet and at what pressure. A contractor who jets everything at the same setting without looking will eventually break a pipe.
