Routine maintenance prevents the failures that account for most emergency calls: frozen coils from restricted airflow, capacitor and contactor failures, refrigerant leaks caught late, cracked heat exchangers, condensate overflows, and the compounding wear that turns a $200 part into a $9,000 replacement.

Airflow Failures

A loaded filter or dirty evaporator coil starves the system. In summer that freezes the coil solid and can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor; in winter it overheats the heat exchanger and trips the high-limit switch repeatedly until something gives. Both start as a filter nobody changed. Maintenance catches it at the filter stage.

Electrical Failures

Capacitors and contactors are the most-replaced parts in the trade. They sit in an outdoor cabinet through 100-degree Albuquerque afternoons and degrade steadily. Tested under load during a tune-up, a weak capacitor is an inexpensive planned replacement. Untested, it fails during the first heat wave and takes out an emergency service call — sometimes the compressor with it.

Refrigerant Leaks

Air conditioners do not consume refrigerant, so low charge always means a leak. Running undercharged overheats the compressor and destroys it. Annual pressure and superheat checks catch a slow leak while it is still a fitting repair rather than a system replacement.

Combustion and Safety Failures

On the heating side, maintenance inspects the heat exchanger for cracks, tests the flame sensor and ignitor, verifies gas pressure, and runs a combustion analysis. A cracked heat exchanger is a carbon monoxide risk, not just a comfort issue — and it is invisible without an inspection. This is the strongest argument for annual furnace maintenance.

Water Damage

A clogged condensate drain backs up into the pan and then into ceilings and walls. Flushing the drain takes minutes during a tune-up; drywall and insulation remediation does not.

The Compounding Effect

Every issue above makes the others worse. Restricted airflow raises compressor amp draw, which shortens capacitor life, which stresses the motor. Systems fail in cascades, and maintenance interrupts the chain early. Book AC service each spring and heating service each fall, or bundle both through the Care Club.
