Call a plumber for persistent leaks, drains that are slow or clog repeatedly, unusual noises in the pipes, low water pressure, an unexplained water bill increase, or discolored water. Any gas odor, sewage backup, or water you cannot stop is an emergency rather than a scheduled call.
The Signs Worth Acting On
- Persistent leaks. A drip that returns after you tighten it usually means a worn seal, a pitted valve seat, or excess water pressure — and the last one is damaging the whole house, not just that fixture.
- Slow or repeat clogs. One slow fixture is local. Several at once, or the same drain clogging monthly, means a shared line problem — worth a professional cleaning and possibly a camera inspection.
- Noises in the walls. Banging (water hammer), whistling (a restriction or pressure issue), or running water when nothing is on.
- Low water pressure. At one fixture it is usually an aerator. Throughout the house it points at supply line corrosion, scale, or a leak.
- An unexplained water bill increase. Often the first sign of a hidden leak. Run the meter test: shut everything off and watch the low-flow indicator for fifteen minutes.
- Discolored water, which suggests corroding pipe or a failing water heater.
- Damp spots, staining, or musty smells — moisture has been present a while.
Why DIY Escalates These
Not because the tasks are impossible, but because the visible symptom is rarely the actual problem. Replacing a washer on a faucet that drips because house pressure is too high fixes nothing and leaves the real cause damaging everything else. Cutting into corroded galvanized reveals more failing pipe. And chemical drain cleaners damage older pipe while rarely clearing a real blockage.
