Ductless mini-splits give you high efficiency, room-by-room temperature control, and heating plus cooling from one system — all without ductwork. That last point matters in Albuquerque, where a large share of the housing stock was built around evaporative cooling or has no usable duct system at all.

No Ductwork Required

A mini-split needs only a small penetration for the refrigerant line set and condensate drain. That makes it the practical answer for adobe homes, casitas, additions, converted garages, sunrooms, and any space where running ducts would mean tearing into finished walls or ceilings. It also avoids the duct leakage problem entirely — conventional systems commonly lose a meaningful share of conditioned air into unconditioned attics.

Zone Control

Each indoor head has its own thermostat. You cool the bedrooms at night without cooling the whole house, keep a west-facing office comfortable through the afternoon without freezing everyone else out, and stop conditioning rooms nobody is using. For homes with a persistent hot room that central air never solved, a single mini-split head often fixes it more cheaply than upsizing the main system.

Efficiency

Inverter-driven compressors modulate output continuously instead of cycling full-on and off. That produces higher measured efficiency, steadier temperatures, quieter operation, and less wear — since startup is when components fail. Combined with zero duct losses, real-world efficiency is often substantially better than a conventional system of the same nameplate rating.

Heating Too

Mini-splits are heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool. In Albuquerque’s mild shoulder seasons they are very efficient at it. In colder microclimates like Santa Fe, Cedar Crest, and the East Mountains, a cold-climate model or a backup heat source is worth discussing.

Straightforward Installation

Most single-zone installs finish in a day, with far less disruption than a ducted retrofit. Multi-zone systems take longer depending on head count and line-set routing.

The Trade-Offs

Indoor heads are visible on the wall, per-zone cost adds up on larger homes, and each head has its own filter to clean. For whole-home coverage in a house with good existing ducts, a conventional system is often the better value.
