The Usual Culprits

  • Hair and soap scum. Soap reacts with hard water minerals to form a sticky residue that coats the pipe wall, and hair binds to it. This combination accounts for most bathroom sink clogs.
  • The pop-up stopper. The pivot rod assembly under the sink catches hair by design. Pulling and cleaning the stopper resolves a surprising share of “slow drain” complaints in about five minutes.
  • Toothpaste and cosmetics. These do not dissolve fully and build up over time.

What You Can Try

Remove and clean the pop-up stopper. Flush with hot water. If you are comfortable, put a bucket underneath and remove the P-trap to clean it directly — that is where most of the material sits.

Skip the caustic drain chemicals. They rarely clear a real blockage, they damage older pipe, and if they fail they leave a trap full of corrosive liquid for the next person to open.

When to Call

If cleaning the stopper and trap does not fix it, the blockage is further down. And if multiple fixtures are slow at once, that points at the branch line or main rather than the sink — worth a professional drain cleaning.
