The clearest sign is a faucet that produces only a trickle — or nothing — during freezing weather. Visible frost on exposed pipe, bulging, unusual odors from a drain, and banging or gurgling in the walls are the others.

Signs a Pipe Is Frozen

  • No water or a bare trickle at one fixture while others work normally. That isolates the blockage to a specific run.
  • Visible frost or condensation on exposed pipe in a garage, crawlspace, or under a sink on an exterior wall.
  • A pipe that looks bulged or distended. Treat that as urgent — it is under pressure and close to failing.
  • Banging, clanking, or gurgling when you open a tap, as water forces past a partial ice blockage.
  • Odd odors from a drain or faucet, which can mean a blockage forcing gas back the wrong way.

Signs a Pipe Has Already Burst

Water stains or damp spots on ceilings and walls, a sudden pressure drop across the whole house, the sound of running water when nothing is on, or an unexplained spike in your water bill. A burst pipe inside a wall can run for hours before anyone notices.

Where to Look

Pipes in unconditioned space are where nearly every New Mexico freeze failure happens — exterior walls, attics, crawlspaces, garages, unheated additions, and exterior hose bibs, especially with a hose still connected.

Act Immediately If You Find One

Shut off the main water supply. Open the affected faucet to relieve pressure — the burst usually comes from water trapped between the ice and a closed tap, so opening it genuinely helps. Then apply gentle heat with a hair dryer, heating pad, or space heater, working from the faucet end toward the blockage.

Never use an open flame — no torches, no propane heaters aimed at pipe. That is how house fires start, and it can also boil trapped water into a steam burst.
