Most heat pumps last 10 to 15 years, with well-maintained systems reaching closer to 20. That range is shorter than a gas furnace’s because a heat pump works year-round rather than seasonally — roughly double the run hours, and wear follows run hours.
Why Heat Pumps Age Faster Than Furnaces
A furnace sits idle for seven months a year in New Mexico. A heat pump runs in July and January both. The compressor, reversing valve, and fan motors accumulate roughly twice the operating hours of a cooling-only system, which is precisely why annual service is not optional on this equipment.
What Extends the Life
- Twice-yearly maintenance. The single biggest factor a homeowner controls. Load-testing capacitors, verifying charge, and cleaning coils prevents the cascading failures that end systems early.
- Correct installation. Proper sizing, a properly evacuated line set, and a measured refrigerant charge. A system charged by guesswork never reaches its rated life.
- Filter changes. Every one to three months. Restricted airflow strains the compressor in both modes.
- A clear outdoor unit. Two feet on all sides, kept free of dust, weeds, and cottonwood.
- Good ductwork and insulation. Reducing the load reduces run time, and less run time means less wear.
What Shortens It
Deferred maintenance, oversizing (which causes short cycling), running the system with a dirty coil or a frozen line set, and heavy reliance on auxiliary heat in a home that is under-insulated. In Albuquerque, dust accumulation on the outdoor coil is an underrated accelerant — a fouled coil raises compressor amp draw and head pressure every single cycle.
When to Start Planning
Past twelve years, begin watching for repeat repairs, climbing bills, and weaker output. A compressor or reversing valve failure at that age rarely justifies repair — those are the two most expensive components in the system. Planning ahead lets you replace on your schedule, compare equipment properly, and arrange financing, instead of taking whatever is available during a heat wave.
