We service both halves of a hybrid system on a twice-yearly schedule: heat pump and cooling service in spring, gas furnace and combustion service in fall, plus verification that the changeover controls and balance point are still working as designed. That last item is unique to dual fuel and easy to overlook.
Spring Visit — Heat Pump and Cooling
- Clean the outdoor coil and clear debris, weeds, and cottonwood
- Verify refrigerant charge with superheat and subcooling
- Load-test capacitors and inspect the contactor
- Measure amp draw on the compressor and fan motors
- Test the reversing valve and defrost controls
- Flush the condensate drain and check the pan
- Confirm temperature split across the indoor coil
Fall Visit — Gas Furnace
- Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks — a safety item, not a comfort item
- Test the ignitor and flame sensor
- Verify gas pressure and run a combustion analysis with carbon monoxide testing
- Check every limit and safety switch
- Inspect the blower and venting
The Hybrid-Specific Check
This is what separates hybrid maintenance from servicing two ordinary systems. We verify the dual-fuel thermostat is switching at the correct outdoor temperature, that the outdoor sensor is reading accurately, and that the balance point still matches your current utility rates. A drifted sensor or a default balance point means you have been running the more expensive heat source without knowing it — the system still works, so nothing alerts you.
Why Twice a Year Is Not Optional Here
A hybrid system has two heat sources plus a cooling system, and the heat pump runs year-round rather than seasonally. That is roughly double the run hours of a cooling-only unit. Combined with Albuquerque’s dust load on outdoor coils, these systems accumulate wear faster than a conventional setup. Manufacturer warranties on the expensive components frequently require documented annual service.
Between Visits
Change filters every one to three months, keep two feet clear around the outdoor unit, and watch for bills that jump without a weather explanation — often the first sign the changeover is misbehaving.
