Between professional visits, the highest-value habits are keeping grease and coffee grounds out of the kitchen sink, flushing only waste and toilet paper, using hair catchers, and running plenty of water when you use the garbage disposal. Skip caustic drain chemicals entirely.
The Kitchen Is Where Most Damage Happens
Grease is the single biggest cause of residential main line buildup. It pours down warm and liquid, then cools and congeals on the pipe wall a few feet in, and everything else sticks to it. Pour cooking grease into a can and throw it away; wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing. Hot water and dish soap do not solve it — they just carry the grease further down before it cools.
Also keep out coffee grounds (they settle like sediment), pasta and rice (they keep swelling), fibrous vegetable scraps, and potato peels. A garbage disposal handles incidental scraps, not a plateful — and always run cold water before, during, and well after using it.
The Bathroom
Flush only waste and toilet paper. “Flushable” wipes are the leading avoidable cause of main line clogs — they clear the toilet and then snag downstream. Use hair catchers in showers and tubs, and clean them every few showers rather than letting them fill.
Do Not Use Chemical Drain Cleaners
They rarely clear an established blockage, they generate heat that damages older cast iron and PVC, and if they fail they leave a line full of caustic liquid for the next person to open. In older Albuquerque homes with aging pipe, they do real harm.
Watch for Early Warnings
Gurgling from a tub when a toilet flushes, more than one fixture draining slowly at once, or sewer odor near a drain that gets regular use. Those mean the shared line is partially blocked — worth addressing before it becomes an emergency.
The Two Local Factors You Can Address
Hard water scales pipe interiors and makes soap scum stickier — a water softener slows it throughout the house. And if you have mature trees over the sewer lateral, roots are the likely eventual cause; annual cleaning and a periodic camera inspection keep ahead of them.
