Safe Thawing, Not Fast Thawing
This matters more than it sounds. We never use open flames, torches, or unvented propane heaters — those cause house fires during cold snaps and can flash trapped water to steam, rupturing a line violently. We use targeted, controlled heat applied from the fixture end toward the blockage, gradually, so meltwater has somewhere to go and thermal shock does not crack pipe that survived the freeze.
We Inspect the Whole System
A pipe that froze in one place almost always has other runs with the same exposure — same wall, same crawlspace, same missing insulation. After flow is restored we pressure test and inspect for cracks, weeping joints, and stressed fittings, because damage frequently reveals itself only once water is moving again. Restoring flow and leaving is how a house has two emergencies in a week.
We Address the Cause
Thawing solves today. The pipe freezes again next cold snap unless something changes. Depending on the situation we recommend pipe insulation, air sealing where cold air reaches the run, heat tape, or rerouting the line out of unconditioned space entirely — usually the right answer for a pipe that has frozen more than once.
