Most sewer excavation projects take two to four days, though a straightforward spot repair with shallow depth and good access can finish in one. Complex jobs — deep lines, long runs, or concrete restoration — can run a week.
What Drives the Timeline
- Depth. A lateral four feet down is a different job than one at ten feet, which requires shoring for worker safety and much more soil handling.
- Length of the damaged run. A spot repair on a few feet versus replacing the full lateral to the city connection.
- What is on the surface. Lawn is quick. Concrete driveways, sidewalks, and patios must be cut, removed, and later repoured — and concrete cure time is not something anyone can compress.
- Utility conflicts. Gas, water, and electrical lines crossing the route require careful hand digging.
- Permits and inspections. Scheduling with the jurisdiction is often the least predictable part of the schedule.
- Soil and weather. Rocky soil slows digging; heavy rain can stop it.
A Typical Sequence
Day one: utility locates, surface protection, excavation. Day two: pipe repair or replacement, inspection where required. Day three: backfill with proper compaction. Day four and beyond: surface restoration.
That compaction step matters more than it sounds. Inadequate compaction is why some sewer repairs leave a depression that keeps settling for years afterward. It is worth the time.

Water service is generally available for most of the project, with specific windows where drains cannot be used. We tell you day by day what to expect and plan those windows around your schedule where possible.

Where the line qualifies, lining or bursting typically finishes in one to two days with far less restoration. We evaluate that first.
