The air handler is the indoor half of your HVAC system — the cabinet containing the blower motor, evaporator coil, and filter that moves conditioned air through your ductwork to every room. On a heat pump or straight AC system, it does the job a furnace does in a gas system.

What Is Inside It

  • Blower motor and squirrel-cage fan. Moves air through the return, across the coil, and out to the supply registers. ECM (variable-speed) motors modulate output; older PSC motors run at fixed speeds.
  • Evaporator coil. Where refrigerant absorbs heat from your indoor air in cooling mode.
  • Filter rack. Where household air gets filtered before reaching the coil and blower.
  • Condensate pan and drain. Collects the water that condenses off the coil and routes it away.
  • Electrical controls and, on many units, auxiliary heat strips for heat pump backup.

What It Does

Pulls air in through the return, filters it, passes it across the coil to be cooled or heated, and pushes it back out through the supply ducts. Everything about how evenly your house is conditioned depends on the air handler moving the right volume of air. It is why an air handler problem usually presents as “some rooms are fine and some are not” rather than as a total failure.

Where It Lives

In Albuquerque homes, typically a mechanical closet, the garage, the attic, or a crawlspace. Attic installations deserve attention — that space exceeds 130 degrees in summer, and a condensate leak up there ends up in your ceiling.

Signs of Trouble

Weak airflow at the registers, rattling or grinding, water around the unit or stains on the ceiling below it, ice on the coil or refrigerant lines, and rooms that never balance. Ice or water means shut the system down and call.

Keeping It Healthy

Change filters every one to three months — restricted airflow is the leading cause of frozen coils and blower strain. Annual maintenance cleans the blower wheel and coil, where Albuquerque dust accumulates, and flushes the condensate drain before it backs up.
