The right ventilation approach depends on how tight your home is, your existing HVAC setup and ductwork condition, whether you run evaporative cooling, and what problem you are actually trying to solve — stale air, odors, humidity, or accumulated pollutants.

What We Evaluate

  • How tight the house is. Older leaky construction exchanges air on its own; newer tight construction does not and needs deliberate ventilation.
  • Existing HVAC system and ductwork. Leaky ducts, undersized returns, and unbalanced airflow are frequently the actual cause of “poor ventilation” complaints — and correcting them solves the problem more directly than adding equipment.
  • Whether you have evaporative cooling. A swamp cooler already ventilates continuously, which changes the calculation substantially in summer.
  • Existing exhaust fans. Kitchen and bath fans that actually vent outside versus ones that recirculate — a surprisingly common gap.
  • The specific complaint. Stale air, lingering odors, excess humidity in one area, or general air quality concerns each point to different solutions.
  • Home size, layout, and occupancy, which set the required exchange rate.

Match the Solution to the Problem

Stale, stuffy air in specific rooms → usually airflow, not ventilation. Duct correction is the answer.

Cooking and bathroom moisture and odors → proper exhaust fans that vent outside.

Whole-home pollutant accumulation in a tight house → a dedicated ventilation system with filtered fresh air intake.

Dust and pollenfiltration, not ventilation. Bringing in more outside air during Albuquerque’s wind season makes that worse, not better.

The Local Wrinkle

Opening windows is the simplest ventilation, and it works on mild days here — but not during spring wind or high-pollen days. Controlled ventilation with filtration gets the exchange without the dust load.
