UV systems are effective against biological contaminants — bacteria, viruses, and mold — and particularly good at preventing growth on your evaporator coil. They do nothing about dust, pollen, or dander, so they work as a layer alongside filtration rather than as a replacement for it.
Where UV Genuinely Delivers
The strongest application is coil sterilization. Your evaporator coil is cold and damp whenever the system runs — the one reliably moist surface in a dry-climate home, and exactly where biological growth takes hold. A UV lamp mounted to shine on the coil prevents that growth continuously. That matters twice over: it keeps contamination out of your airstream, and it keeps the coil clean, which directly affects heat transfer and run time.
This is the application where UV is most clearly worth the money, and it is often overlooked in favor of in-duct air treatment.
Where It Is More Limited
UV kills microorganisms through exposure time. Air moving quickly past a lamp in a duct gets limited exposure, so in-duct air sterilization is less effective than the marketing suggests — it helps, but it is not equivalent to filtration. The coil application works better precisely because the coil surface has continuous exposure.
What It Does Not Do at All
Dust, pollen, pet dander, and other particulate pass through UV light unaffected. If your complaint is dust or seasonal allergies, filtration is what you need — UV will not help. It also does not address odors or VOCs, which need activated carbon.
The Combination That Works
Thick media filtration for the dust load, activated carbon for odors, and UV at the coil for biological growth. Each covers what the others miss.
Maintenance Is Not Optional
UV bulbs lose output gradually and need annual replacement — they keep glowing long after they have stopped being effective, which is why replacing on schedule rather than on appearance matters.
