Most residential heat pump installations take one to two days. A straightforward replacement on existing, adequate ductwork is usually a single day. Two days is typical when ductwork, electrical service, or line sets need modification.
What Happens on Day One
The crew protects floors and pathways, recovers refrigerant from the old system per EPA requirements, and removes the old outdoor unit and indoor air handler. New equipment is set, the line set is connected or replaced, electrical and control wiring are landed, and the system is evacuated to remove moisture and non-condensables before charging. That evacuation step is skipped by careless installers and is a leading cause of premature compressor failure — it is worth asking about.
What Pushes It to Two Days
- Duct modifications or sealing — common when replacing a system that never cooled evenly, and standard on homes converted from evaporative cooling
- Electrical panel upgrades or a new circuit
- Replacing an aging line set rather than reusing it
- Difficult access — rooftop units, tight mechanical closets, or crawlspace air handlers
- Adding a hybrid fuel gas furnace alongside the heat pump
- Permit inspection scheduling
What You Should Expect From the Crew

Planning Around It
Your heating and cooling will be off for most of the workday. In an Albuquerque July or a Santa Fe January, plan accordingly. Clear three feet around the outdoor pad, open a path from the driveway, secure pets, and provide access to the electrical panel and attic hatch.
