Most thermostat installations take one to two hours. A straight swap on compatible wiring can be under an hour; running a new C wire, configuring a heat pump or dual-fuel system, or setting up zoning pushes it toward the longer end.

What the Visit Involves

  1. Power off at the breaker and inspection of the existing wiring
  2. Removal of the old unit and documentation of the wire configuration
  3. Mounting and wiring the new thermostat
  4. Configuration for your specific equipment — staging, heat pump auxiliary heat, dual-fuel changeover, fan settings
  5. Wi-Fi setup and app pairing on smart models
  6. Full test of heating, cooling, and fan in every mode
  7. A walkthrough of scheduling and features

What Adds Time

  • No C wire. Most smart thermostats need a common wire for continuous power. Many older Albuquerque homes were wired without one, so we either pull new wire or install an adapter at the air handler. This is the most common source of extra time.
  • Heat pump or dual-fuel configuration. Getting auxiliary heat staging and changeover right takes deliberate setup — a default configuration here quietly costs money all winter.
  • Relocation. If the existing thermostat sits in direct sun, above a register, or on an exterior wall, it reads the wrong temperature. Moving it means new wire and drywall repair.
  • Zoning systems with multiple thermostats and dampers.
  • Communicating or proprietary controls matched to variable-speed equipment.

Why Configuration Matters More Than Installation

Hanging a thermostat on the wall is the easy part. The failures we get called out to fix are almost always configuration: a smart thermostat that runs a heat pump’s expensive auxiliary heat when it should not, or a dual-fuel system burning gas when the heat pump would be cheaper. A correctly configured thermostat pays for itself; a misconfigured one costs money silently.
