Portable UV purifiers treat one room and operate independently. Whole-house UV systems install in your HVAC system — and the most valuable version mounts at the evaporator coil, preventing biological growth on the one reliably damp surface in your home.
Portable UV Purifiers
Strengths: no installation, movable, and they work in rentals or where you cannot modify the HVAC system. Most combine UV with filtration, which is the sensible design since UV alone does nothing about particulate.
Limitations: one room at a time, floor space, fan noise, and they only work when running. Air passes the lamp quickly, so exposure time is limited.
Whole-House UV Systems
Coil-mounted UV is the application worth understanding. A lamp aimed at the evaporator coil prevents mold and bacterial growth on a surface that is cold and wet whenever the system runs. That keeps contamination out of your airstream and keeps the coil clean, which directly affects heat transfer and run time. This is where UV delivers the clearest value.
In-duct air sterilization treats air as it passes the lamp. It helps, but air moves quickly past, so exposure time is limited — this application is less effective than marketing typically implies.
The Honest Comparison
Whole-house systems cover every room automatically and, at the coil, do something portable units cannot do at all. Portable units are better suited to a single problem room or a situation where HVAC modification is not possible.
Neither Replaces Filtration
UV does nothing about dust, pollen, or dander. If those are your concern, you need filtration — UV is a complement, not a substitute. The effective setup is thick media filtration plus UV at the coil, with activated carbon if odors are an issue.
Maintenance
UV bulbs lose output gradually and need annual replacement. They keep glowing well past the point of being effective.
