We work on every cooling system common in New Mexico: high-efficiency central air conditioning, evaporative coolers, refrigerated air conversions, ductless mini-splits, heat pumps, and hybrid systems — residential and light commercial.
Central Air Conditioning
Conventional split systems remain the standard for whole-home cooling. They hold a set temperature regardless of outdoor humidity, which matters during monsoon season when evaporative cooling struggles. We handle repair, maintenance, installation, and replacement, along with the individual components — condensers and air handlers.
Evaporative Coolers
Swamp coolers are a genuine New Mexico specialty. Our dry climate is one of the few places in the country where they work well, and they cost dramatically less to run than refrigerated air. Thousands of Albuquerque homes still rely on them. We handle spring startups, pad and pump replacement, bearing service, repairs, winterization, and new installs across MasterCool, Breezair, Champion, and Frigiking.
Refrigerated Air Conversions
Converting from evaporative to refrigerated air is one of the most common upgrades in the metro — and one of the most commonly done badly. It is not a unit swap: it requires evaluating duct capacity (evaporative ducts are usually oversized and unsealed for refrigerated use), electrical service, roof or pad location, and load. We do the full assessment before quoting.
Ductless Mini-Splits
The right answer for casitas, additions, converted garages, sunrooms, and older adobe homes with no ductwork. They also solve the one-room-that-never-cools problem without re-engineering the whole system.
Heat Pumps and Hybrid Systems
Heat pumps cool and heat from one system and are very efficient during our long, mild shoulder seasons. Hybrid fuel pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace that takes over when it gets genuinely cold — an especially good fit for Santa Fe and the East Mountains.
Choosing Between Them
Home size, duct condition, insulation, elevation, budget, and how much monsoon humidity bothers you all factor in. We run a load calculation rather than guessing. Contact B. Carlson to talk options in Albuquerque.
