UV helps with allergy and respiratory symptoms driven by mold and biological contaminants, particularly by preventing growth on your evaporator coil. It does nothing about dust, pollen, or pet dander — the allergens most people are actually reacting to.

What UV Actually Addresses

  • Mold growth on the evaporator coil. The strongest application. Your coil is cold and damp whenever the system runs — the one reliably moist surface in a dry-climate home. Mold growing there gets distributed through every room, and UV mounted at the coil prevents it.
  • Bacteria and viruses circulating through the ductwork
  • Musty odors traceable to biological growth in the system

For someone whose symptoms are mold-driven, or who notices a musty smell when the system starts, this is genuinely useful.

What It Does Not Address

Being direct about this, because it is the most common mismatch: dust, pollen, pet dander, and dust mite allergens pass through UV light completely unaffected. Those are the allergens most households are reacting to, particularly in Albuquerque with our dust load and cottonwood and juniper pollen. If that describes your symptoms, you need filtration — UV will produce no improvement at all.

The Combination That Works for Allergies

Thick media filtration for particulate — the primary tool. UV at the coil to prevent biological growth. Activated carbon if odors or VOCs are involved. And in winter, a humidifier, since very dry air irritates airways and makes every other symptom feel worse.

Start With Maintenance

If your coil and blower wheel are already caked with dust and biological growth, cleaning them delivers more improvement than adding UV to keep them clean going forward. Maintenance first, then equipment.

Bulb Replacement Matters

UV output declines gradually while the bulb continues to glow. Annual replacement, on schedule rather than on appearance.
