It depends on the filter type. Standard one-inch filters need changing every one to three months. Thick media filters in a whole-home cabinet last six to twelve months. HEPA and specialty media follow the manufacturer’s schedule, typically six to twelve months, with pre-filters changed more often.

By Filter Type

  • Standard one-inch filters: 1–3 months, or 30–60 days with pets or allergies
  • Thick media filters (4–5 inch): 6–12 months. The extra surface area is why they last so much longer while filtering better.
  • HEPA media: per manufacturer, generally 6–12 months
  • Pre-filters in a multi-stage system: more frequently, since they exist to protect the more expensive media behind them
  • Activated carbon: typically 6 months, since it stops adsorbing once saturated
  • UV bulbs: annually — they continue to glow well past the point where output has dropped below useful, so replace on schedule rather than on appearance

The Test That Beats the Calendar

Hold the filter to a light. If light does not pass through the media, it is overdue. For a whole-home cabinet, pressure gauges before and after the housing tell you the same thing more precisely — a growing pressure difference means the media is loading.

What Shortens the Interval Here

Albuquerque’s dust load is high year-round and spikes during spring wind season, and cottonwood and juniper pollen add a seasonal layer. Filters here genuinely load faster than the intervals printed on the packaging, which assume average national conditions. Homes with pets, on dirt roads, or near open land should be at the short end.

Why Not to Stretch It

A loaded filter restricts airflow, which freezes evaporator coils in summer and overheats heat exchangers in winter — the two most expensive failures in the system. It also stops filtering effectively, bypassing air around its edges.

Getting Longer Intervals
