The signs are dust that reappears within a day of cleaning, lingering odors, allergy or asthma symptoms that worsen indoors, dry or stuffy air, and visible mold or moisture. Symptoms improving when you leave the house is the most telling indicator.

What to Watch For

  • Dust returning immediately after cleaning. Usually a filtration problem, a dirty blower wheel redistributing dust, or return-side duct leaks pulling attic air into the supply.
  • Lingering odors that do not clear — musty smells especially, which suggest moisture somewhere in the system.
  • Allergy or asthma symptoms that worsen indoors and improve when you leave. This is the strongest signal available, and it is worth paying attention to.
  • Dry air causing irritated eyes, nose, and throat, plus static electricity and cracked woodwork. Extremely common here in winter.
  • Stale or stuffy air, particularly in specific rooms, which points to airflow or ventilation problems.
  • Visible mold or moisture around windows, under sinks, or near the air handler.
  • Headaches or fatigue that improve outside the house.

One That Requires Immediate Action

Headache, dizziness, and nausea that improve when you leave can indicate carbon monoxide rather than general air quality. Working CO detectors on every level are essential in any home with gas appliances. If an alarm sounds, everyone goes outside and you call 911.

Where the Problem Usually Is

The evaporator coil, the blower wheel, the condensate pan, an overdue filter, and duct leaks. Those are the surfaces where dust and biological growth actually accumulate, and your HVAC system passes all your household air across them several times an hour.
