The honest answer: a shower drain installation is one of the few plumbing jobs where a mistake is genuinely expensive, because the connection sits behind tile or under a slab. Getting the pan seal, slope, trap, and venting right the first time is what you are paying for — a leak here is discovered months later as a stained ceiling.
What Actually Goes Wrong on DIY Installs
- The pan seal. The joint between the drain body and the shower pan or liner is the waterproofing. If it is wrong, water bypasses the drain entirely and soaks into subfloor and framing. You will not know for months.
- Slope. Drain lines need correct fall — too little and water sits, too much and solids outrun the liquid and settle.
- Venting. An improperly vented trap siphons dry every time the shower drains, letting sewer gas into the bathroom. This is the cause of a lot of “mystery smell” complaints.
- Material transitions. Connecting new PVC or ABS to existing cast iron requires proper fittings. Done poorly, the joint leaks or catches debris and becomes the next clog point.
- Trap configuration. Wrong trap type or size means recurring clogs or lost seal.
