Replace your thermostat when room temperature does not match the setting, the system short-cycles, the display is blank or unresponsive, the unit will not hold a schedule, or it is an old mercury or mechanical model. Any of those costs you comfort and money every day it stays on the wall.

The Signs

  • Temperature does not match the setting. Put a separate thermometer next to it. A few degrees of drift means the system runs when it should not — every cycle, all season.
  • Short cycling. Starting and stopping every few minutes strains equipment badly. A failing thermostat is one cause, though restricted airflow and oversized equipment are others worth ruling out.
  • Blank, dim, or unresponsive display. Try fresh batteries first — this is by far the most common false alarm.
  • Will not hold a schedule or loses programming.
  • The system will not respond to setting changes, or heats when it should cool.
  • It is a mercury or mechanical dial model. These are inaccurate by modern standards and cannot do setbacks at all. Mercury units also need proper disposal.

Rule Out the Cheap Causes First

Fresh batteries, a clean interior (dust on the contacts causes erratic behavior), and correct mode settings resolve a real share of suspected thermostat failures. Also check placement — a thermostat in direct sun, above a heat register, or on an exterior wall reads the wrong temperature no matter how good it is. That is a relocation problem, not a replacement problem.

Do Not Assume It Is the Thermostat

Uneven temperatures between rooms are usually duct or airflow problems. A system that will not reach setpoint on extreme days is usually a capacity issue. Replacing the thermostat in those cases changes nothing. Our technicians diagnose the actual cause before recommending a part.

Choosing the Replacement

Compatibility comes first — single-stage, two-stage, variable-speed, heat pump with auxiliary heat, and hybrid fuel systems all have different control requirements.
