Replace rather than repair when the unit leaks from its body, when it hums with no rotation after the impeller has been freed, when it grinds loudly or vibrates hard, when jams have become frequent, or when it is past about ten years.
Signs It Should Be Replaced
- Leaking from the body. Water from the seam or the bottom of the unit means the internal seal has failed. There is no practical repair — the motor housing is not serviceable. (A leak at the sink flange or the drain connection is a different, fixable problem.)
- Hums with no rotation after clearing the jam. Usually a failed start capacitor or a burned-out motor. On most residential units, replacement costs less than the repair.
- Loud grinding or heavy vibration. Worn bearings or a damaged impeller. It will get worse.
- Frequent jams with normal use, indicating worn impellers that no longer grind effectively.
- Persistent odor that returns after cleaning the splash guard and the chamber — usually food trapped in a corroded or pitted interior.
- Age past ten years. Most residential disposals run eight to twelve.
- Frequent reset trips with normal loads, meaning the motor is struggling.
Signs It Is Just a Repair
A jam that clears with the hex wrench. A tripped reset that stays reset. A leak at the sink flange, which needs re-sealing rather than replacement. A leak at the drain or dishwasher connection, which is a fitting. And a sink that backs up while the disposal runs fine — that is a drain line problem entirely.
Why Replacement Often Wins
Residential disposals are not built to be rebuilt. The motor and impeller assembly is sealed, parts availability is limited, and labor to diagnose and repair frequently exceeds the cost of a new unit — especially since replacement is a straightforward swap when the mounting assembly is compatible.
