A hybrid — or dual fuel — system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles heating and cooling most of the year, and when outdoor temperatures fall below a set point where gas becomes cheaper to run, the system automatically switches over to the furnace. You get heat pump efficiency in mild weather and gas furnace output when it is genuinely cold.
How the Switchover Works
The thermostat monitors outdoor temperature against a balance point — the temperature at which running the heat pump costs more per unit of heat than running gas. Above it, the heat pump runs. Below it, the furnace takes over and the heat pump stops. The handoff is automatic and requires nothing from you once it is set correctly.
Why It Suits New Mexico Particularly Well
Our heating season is dominated by mild days, with a limited number of genuinely cold ones. That distribution is close to ideal for hybrid: the heat pump covers the large majority of heating hours at high efficiency, and the furnace covers the smaller number of hours where a heat pump alone would lean on expensive electric auxiliary heat. In Santa Fe, Edgewood, and the East Mountains — where deep cold is routine — a hybrid system frequently beats a straight heat pump on both comfort and operating cost.

What It Requires
